Store Norske is the northernmost mining company in the world. Store Norske was established in 1916 and currently operates two coal mines on Svalbard: Svea Nord, 60 kilometers south of Longyearbyen, and the Gruve 7 mine, in the valley of Adventdalen outside Longyearbyen. With 350 employees, Store Norske is the largest cornerstone enterprise on Svalbard. The company is an important contributor to a stable and robust community in Longyearbyen.

Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani AS has entered into a contract to buy 55 percent of the shares in Pole Position Spitsbergen AS.
Trond Giske, Norway’s Minister of Trade and Industry, announced on 22 December 2011 to the board of directors of Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani that the Ministry of Trade and Industry has given the green light for the opening of a new coal mine at Lunckefjell. The announcement came as the Ministry of the Environment gave approvals for the project under the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act.
