Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani AS
Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani AS (SNSG) operates Store Norske’s two coal mines on Svalbard: Svea Nord in Svea and the Gruve 7 mine outside Longyearbyen.
SNSG has 350 employees and a head office in Longyearbyen. Most of the company’s employees work in Svea and are involved in the operation of the Svea Nord mine. A number of employees also operate some of the infrastructure in Svea, which is at the innermost end of the Van Mijen fjord and has no road connection. In addition, SNSG purchases services from Leonhard Nilsen & Sønner Spitsbergen AS (transport and loading of coal), ISS AS (staff canteens and cleaning), Lufttransport AS (air services to Svea), the shipping company Jebsens AS (ship transport of coal) and Oxbow Coal B.V. (sales of coal).
SNSG was formed on 1 January 2002 after the Storting gave its consent for permanent operations in Svea Nord, on the condition that Store Norske’s mining operations were economically viable. SNSG has consistently made a profit since the company was established, with the exception of 2006 when SNSG was badly affected by a fire in the mine followed by eight months’ cessation of operations in Svea Nord.
