Properties and claim areas

Store Norske’s properties on Svalbard cover an area of about 2 000 square kilometres, mostly in central Spitsbergen, the main island. These properties include land owned by the company in the valley of Longyeardalen, which is managed in close cooperation with the Longyearbyen local government.

Store Norske currently has 316 claim areas in Svalbard. A claim area is an exclusive right to work mines within a limited area. The conditions for working mines on Svalbard are regulated in the Mining Code (Mining Regulations) for Spitsbergen (Svalbard). It is the Commissioner of Mines at Svalbard who assigns and maintains control of the claim areas. Most of Store Norske’s claim areas are on Spitsbergen and are for coal. The company also has claim areas in resources like petroleum and gold.
