Last coal ship from Svea

The last coal ship for the year left Svea on Monday morning with 80,000 tonnes on board. The coal will be unloaded in Esbjerg in Denmark and in Immingham in England.
“Because of the cold weather, there was some uncertainty about whether the concentration plant would manage to deliver enough purified coal for the last shipment, but it all went very well. In fact, we produced 8,000 tonnes more than what was actually loaded on board,” explains Technical Manager Cato Lund.

And with that, the shipping season in Svea is over for another year. Twenty-four carriers have collected coal at Kapp Amsterdam and transported it to European ports. Two vessels also shipped coal from the Gruve 7 mine from Longyearbyen. A last shipment from Longyearbyen is planned towards the end of the year.

Apart from the large amounts of drift ice at Bellsund that created problems in July/August, there were no difficulties affecting this year’s shipping season. This was also the first Svalbard season for Store Norske’s new shipping partner, DS Norden, a collaboration which has proved highly successful.
